Upright Elephant Ears
This type of elephant ear is in the alocasia family and refers to the upward direction that the leaf points.
These plants have solid green shiny leaves (sorry no fancy color offerings just yet). They typically grow anywhere from 3’-5’, but to tend to grow larger than our traditional elephant ears. They will grow in full sun, but like caladiums, partial shade is ideal. This type of Elephant Ear can grow year round if temperatures allow. This particular
bulb is oblong and measured on circumference, different from caladium bulbs that are measured on diameter. We offer the following sizes.
#701 - 7” – 9” plantain
#702 - 9” – 11” big sweet potato
#703 – 11” – 13” large stalk of celery
Elephant Ear bulbs should be planted about 3-4 inches below the soil. Plant root end down, sprout end up. Spacing depends of the look you are trying to achieve. We suggest 2 feet apart for nice fullness and 1 foot apart for a jungle look.
Elephant Ears should be stored in a warm area with good air circulation. Rotate bulbs about once a month to help eliminate soft spots.
